A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, or VBIED, is a car, truck, SUV, trailer, or other ground vehicle adapted to carry and deliver an explosive charge. In the Boko Haram Insurgency, Boko Haram and ISWAP have used VBIEDs as assault and breach weapons against military positions in northeast Nigeria and the Lake Chad basin.
Used by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters as vehicle-delivered explosive weapons in attacks on Nigerian and regional force positions, including documented 2021 Mallam Fatori fighting and a 2025 New Marte attack where troops recovered an explosive-rigged SUV.
