Direct proof of use
Vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices are documented in the 2014 Yemen Civil War through AQAP claims, incident reporting, and official terrorism reporting. FDD's Long War Journal reported that AQAP said it used a VBIED against a Houthi gathering near Radaa on October 16, 2014, and then claimed a car-bomb attack near a local official's residence in Radaa on October 20.
Later reporting shows the same method in AQAP's campaign against southern Yemeni security forces. Al Jazeera reported that AQAP claimed responsibility for an August 16, 2024 attack in Abyan in which a bomber detonated a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device at a military post used by STC-aligned forces. U.S. State Department reporting for 2024 separately lists vehicle-borne IEDs among AQAP attack methods in Yemen.

Timeline
The earliest documented civil-war entries in this record come from October 2014, soon after Houthi-aligned forces took Sanaa. AQAP publicly framed its operations as attacks on Houthi forces around Radaa and Bayda, and Long War Journal reported AQAP statements describing both a VBIED and a car bomb during those clashes.
The later record is concentrated in the south, especially Abyan. Australian National Security's AQAP statement of reasons lists a March 15, 2022 vehicle-borne IED attack against the commander of a separatist force in Abyan. Al Jazeera then reported the August 16, 2024 Mudiyah attack, and ACLED's 2026 analysis describes car bombs as part of AQAP's renewed high-profile attacks against STC forces in Abyan.

Narrative
The supported role for VBIEDs in Yemen is an insurgent attack method used by AQAP rather than a standardized weapon supplied through a state inventory. The sources describe car bombs and vehicle-borne IEDs used against rival armed groups, local military or security positions, and STC-aligned forces in southern Yemen.
The evidence also shows a shift in target sets over time. In 2014, the documented AQAP car-bomb claims were tied to clashes with Houthi-aligned forces around Radaa and Bayda. By 2022-2024, documented VBIED and car-bomb use centered on Abyan and the contest between AQAP and UAE-backed or STC-aligned security forces. ACLED describes the August 2024 attack as the deadliest car-bomb incident of its kind since 2015 and places it in a pattern of AQAP strikes on STC military sites.
