The FN Minimi is a Belgian belt-fed light machine gun developed by Fabrique Nationale for squad automatic fire, with 5.56 mm NATO models widely fielded as national variants such as the U.S. M249, Canadian C9, and Australian F89. In the 2014 Yemen Civil War, Amnesty International reported Belgian Minimis deployed by The Giants Brigades, tying the weapon to UAE-backed coalition-aligned ground forces around the Hodeidah offensive.

Role in Conflicts

A Philippine report on the Armed Forces of the Philippines Special Operations Command Marawi museum said M249 and SAW weapons were among more than 400 firearms recovered from enemy forces after the 2017 Battle of Marawi; the source documents captured weapons rather than observed firing.

Family And Feed System

The Minimi family is useful as a family-level catalog record because the same Belgian design appears under national designations while keeping the same basic light-machine-gun role: a portable automatic weapon for squad or section fire support.

Core layout

FN Herstal and U.S. Marine training material describe a gas-operated, open-bolt automatic weapon built around belt feed, with magazine feed available on many 5.56 mm configurations.

Mk3 configuration split

FN Herstal separates current 5.56 Mk3 models by barrel length and stock: Standard, Para, Tactical SB, Tactical LB, and SF.

National designations

The U.S. M249, Australian F89/F89A1/Para Minimi, Canadian C9A2, and Mk 46 are treated here as sourced Minimi-family designations rather than separate unrelated systems.

Source labels used here: FN MINIMI 5.56 MK3; M249 Light Machinegun Student Handout; FN M249 SAW; FN MK 46 MOD 1; FN MK 46 MOD 2; F89 and Para Minimi; F89A1 Minimi; C9A2 Light Machine Gun.

Variants

The Minimi page covers the Belgian FN family and national 5.56 mm derivatives where sources identify them as Minimi/M249/C9/F89 light support weapons rather than separate unrelated machine guns.
