  • Tank, Combat, 120-mm Gun, Challenger 2

The Challenger 2 is a British third-generation main battle tank built around a rifled 120 mm gun, heavy composite armor, and four-person crew operations. It served with British forces in the 2003 Iraq War and later became one of the first Western main battle tanks transferred to Ukraine during the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War.

Role in Conflicts

Service And Upgrade Context

Challenger 2 appears in distinct service contexts: British Army heavy armor, the Iraq War combat record, the Ukraine transfer, and the Challenger 3 rebuild path.

ContextSource-backed detailWhy it matters
British Army tankThe British Army describes Challenger 2 as a four-crew main battle tank with a 120 mm rifled main armament and heavy protection. These facts frame the tank's role as a protected direct-fire platform rather than a missile carrier or light armored vehicle.
Iraq War serviceBritish Army background lists Iraq among Challenger 2 operations, and the catalogd 25 March 2003 inquiry records a Basra-area Challenger 2 engagement. The Iraq row is based on direct campaign-era service evidence, not only on general procurement history.
Ukraine transferUK Ministry of Defence releases document a 14-tank transfer package with ammunition, spares, recovery vehicles, and UK-based crew training. The Ukraine row reflects a donor-supplied squadron-scale deployment rather than broad Ukrainian armored inventory claims.
Challenger 3 pathRBSL and DE&S describe the Challenger 3 programme as a rebuild of selected Challenger 2 vehicles with a new turret and smoothbore gun.The upgrade path explains why Challenger 2 remains central to British heavy armor even as the baseline tank ages.

Developed by the IVECO-Fiat and OTO Melara consortium, it combines an OTO Melara 105 mm/52 rifled gun, a four-person crew, long road range, and a comparatively light wheeled chassis; documented conflict use includes Italian UNOSOM II fighting in Somalia, coalition employment in Iraq, and Ukrainian service where crews have added anti-drone protection and used the gun from closed firing positions.
