Challenger 2 was fielded by British forces in the 2003 Iraq War as part of the United Kingdom's Operation Telic ground force. The Iraq Inquiry records that the British land deployment was equipped with Challenger 2 tanks and that 7 Armoured Brigade provided a significant part of the coalition's available tank force in the opening stage of the campaign.
The tank's presence in combat is also documented through Operation Telic fratricide reporting. The House of Commons Defence Committee reported that a UK Challenger 2 main battle tank was engaged by another Challenger 2 during the warfighting phase, killing two crew members and seriously wounding two others; the archived Ministry of Defence Board of Inquiry covers the 25 March 2003 Challenger 2 incident.

Timeline
On 20 January 2003, the UK Defence Secretary announced the deployment of a major ground force that included Challenger 2 tanks, Warrior infantry fighting vehicles, AS90 self-propelled guns, and helicopters. By the start of ground operations, 7 Armoured Brigade contributed a significant portion of the coalition tank force.
The main land offensive began on 21 March 2003. The Iraq Inquiry describes 7 Armoured Brigade relieving US forces south of Basra by 22 March, arraying around Basra's outskirts by 23 March, dominating the Basra area and defeating resistance in nearby az-Zubayr by 25 March, and entering Basra in force on the night of 6/7 April.

Narrative
In the invasion phase, Challenger 2 served as the British Army's heavy armored component for coalition operations in southern Iraq. Official inquiry material places the tank-equipped 7 Armoured Brigade around Basra, where UK forces screened the city, secured and relieved positions south of it, and conducted raids before the larger entry into Basra.
The sources support armored assault, direct-fire, and force-protection roles, but they do not provide a complete open-source shot-by-shot account for individual Challenger 2 crews. The strongest public record is therefore at the formation and incident level: Challenger 2 tanks deployed with UK ground forces, 7 Armoured Brigade operated around Basra and later entered the city, and at least one Challenger 2-on-Challenger 2 engagement was recorded during the warfighting phase.
