Germany announced the first Marder deliveries in January 2023, Rheinmetall documented refurbished 1A3 batches through a December 2024 order for 20 more vehicles, and the German government's archived April 2025 list counted 140 delivered Marder IFVs with 25 more in preparation.

The Marder 1A3 is a German tracked infantry fighting vehicle with a forward powerpack, rear troop compartment, 20 mm cannon, machine gun, smoke launchers, and anti-tank missile fit. First transferred to the German Army in 1971, the family was upgraded through the 1A3 armor retrofit and later service-life extensions, then documented in KFOR Kosovo service, German Afghanistan deployments, and German-supported Ukrainian service.
Role in Conflicts
Rheinmetall says Marder 1A3 vehicles moved into the former Yugoslavia with NATO-led KFOR from 12 June 1999 and were then used for security, checkpoint guarding, area surveillance, convoy escort, and patrol escort tasks.
German forces deployed Marder 1A5A1 vehicles to Afghanistan from late 2007, where Rheinmetall describes them as patrol, convoy-protection, and quick-reaction-force vehicles for the Bundeswehr contingent.
Role detailsService-Life Upgrades
The Marder's long service life is defined by repeated upgrade waves rather than a single modernization step.
| Period | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1977-1979 | MILAN integration added four guided missiles on board and reduced the carried infantry to 6 or 7 soldiers. | Rheinmetall |
| 1989-1998 | The 1A3 retrofit covered 2,097 vehicles and added turret and hull armor against 30 mm cannon fire. | Rheinmetall |
| 2016 onward | Bundeswehr service-life extension introduced MELLS, new driver vision, and drivetrain updates for later Marder variants. | Rheinmetall |

Export Operators And Derivatives
The German Marder family also became an export and derivative base, with Rheinmetall's history separating the Argentine TAM line from later surplus Marder 1A3 exports.
| Customer | System | Documented context |
|---|---|---|
| Argentina | TAM family | Thyssen-Henschel exported the Marder-derived Tanque Argentino Mediano concept in 1977, followed by personnel-carrier, mortar, command, artillery, ambulance, recovery, and rocket-launcher family members or prototypes. |
| Chile | Marder 1A3 | Chile decided in 2008 to buy surplus Bundeswehr Marder 1A3 IFVs, driver-training vehicles, and additional vehicles for spares. |
| Indonesia | Marder 1A3 | Rheinmetall says Indonesia received 42 Marder 1A3 IFVs from company stocks starting in 2015. |
| Jordan | Marder 1A3 | Germany transferred 75 Marder 1A3 IFVs, including two driver-training vehicles and spare parts, to Jordan from 2017 to 2020 under a military-assistance program. |
