NEARTIP path

USNI described Mod 5 NEARTIP as an upgrade adding improved acoustic guidance and countermeasure resistance, with FY 1979 operational scheduling.

VLA and successor context

The Navy says MOD 5A(SW) also serves as a Vertical Launch ASROC payload, while the MK 54 later integrated MK 46 and MK 50 program hardware and software with newer digital processing.
