1990 Gulf War

Mirage F1 in the 1990 Gulf War

Mirage F1 aircraft appeared on both sides of the 1990 Gulf War: Kuwaiti and French coalition F-1s struck Iraqi field forces, while Iraqi Mirage F1s attempted limited air action and were repeatedly shot down by coalition fighters.

Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The Mirage F1 is directly documented in the 1990 Gulf War through U.S. Department of Defense reporting on coalition battlefield air operations and air-to-air victories. The DoD final report lists Kuwaiti Air Force F-1s attacking Iraqi artillery batteries and other Iraqi forces in the Kuwait Theater of Operations, and it separately records French Air Force F-1s and Jaguars striking artillery, armor, and troops in the same theater.

The Iraqi Air Force also fielded French-built F-1s. The same DoD report describes Iraq's French-built F-1 force as an elite part of the Iraqi Air Force and lists multiple F-1 Mirage losses to coalition fighters between January 17 and January 27, 1991, including two Mirage F1s shot down by a Royal Saudi Air Force F-15C on January 24. A specialist airpower history source describes that January 24 event as an Iraqi Mirage F1 attack attempt against Saudi oil facilities.

Combat chronology

The documented Mirage F1 combat record begins at the opening of Operation Desert Storm. On January 17, 1991, the DoD final report's air-to-air victory table lists U.S. Air Force F-15Cs downing Iraqi F-1 Mirages. On January 19, the table lists two more F-1 Mirage kills by 33rd Tactical Fighter Wing F-15Cs.

On January 24, 1991, Iraqi Mirage F1s were used in a limited offensive air action. From Balloons to Drones describes two Iraqi Mirage F1s armed with incendiary bombs taking part in an attempted strike on a Saudi oil refinery, and the DoD victory table records a Royal Saudi Air Force F-15C downing two F-1 Mirages that day. The DoD table lists another F-1 Mirage downed by a 36th Tactical Fighter Wing F-15C on January 27.

Coalition Mirage F1 battlefield use is documented during the ground-offensive phase. In the DoD final report's account of direct support to the ground campaign, Kuwaiti F-1s attacked artillery batteries and other Iraqi forces, while French F-1s and Jaguars struck Iraqi artillery, armor, and troops in the Kuwait Theater of Operations.

Operational role

The Mirage F1's Gulf War use was unusual because the same French-built aircraft family appeared in opposing inventories. On the coalition side, Kuwaiti and French F-1s were used for battlefield attack against Iraqi field forces in and around Kuwait. Their documented targets fit the air-interdiction and fire-support layer of the campaign: artillery batteries, armor, troops, and other Iraqi forces.

On the Iraqi side, the F-1 represented one of Iraq's more capable Western-built combat aircraft, but coalition air superiority sharply constrained its wartime use. The DoD report notes that the Iraqi Air Force averaged only about 30 fighter sorties per day in the first week and that Iraq sheltered aircraft after early losses. The documented F-1 record in this usage page therefore centers on attempted offensive action and air-to-air losses rather than sustained Iraqi sortie generation.

The sources support use, not precise sortie totals for each Mirage F1 operator. The strongest direct evidence identifies coalition F-1 strike roles in the Kuwait Theater of Operations and Iraqi F-1 aircraft lost during air combat, with the January 24 Iraqi strike attempt independently described by an airpower-history source.
