Dassault Rafale

Also known as
  • Rafale
  • Rafale B
  • Rafale C
  • Rafale M
  • Rafale F3
  • Rafale F4

The Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine multirole fighter built around air defense, reconnaissance, close air support, and deep-strike missions with a common airframe for air force and naval variants. Its documented combat use spans French operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, and the anti-Islamic State air campaign, while Indian Air Force Rafales were reported in the 2025 India-Pakistan Conflict as stand-off strike aircraft using SCALP and HAMMER munitions during Operation Sindoor.

Role in Conflicts

Side
India

Used by the Indian Air Force during Operation Sindoor for reported stand-off strikes with SCALP cruise missiles and HAMMER precision-guided munitions; later Indian reporting quoted the Vice Chief of Air Staff calling Rafale central to the operation, while public loss and effect claims from the wider air battle remain disputed.

Mission System And Standards

The Rafale is a mission-system family rather than a single export configuration. Dassault describes a common fighter line for air superiority, strike, reconnaissance, nuclear deterrence, and naval operations, with continuing standards work from F3 combat use through F4.1 and future F5 development.

Sensors

RBE2 AESA radar, Front Sector Optronics, SPECTRA electronic-warfare suite, and networked tactical datalinks support both air-to-air and surface-attack missions.

Weapons

Public Dassault material lists Meteor, MICA, HAMMER/AASM, SCALP, AM39 Exocet, laser-guided bombs, unguided bombs, and the internal 30 mm cannon among cleared or described Rafale weapons.

Upgrade path

The F4.1 standard entered French service in 2023, while Dassault links F5 development to future collaborative combat and a companion uncrewed combat aircraft.

Variants

Dassault describes three main French-service airframes with high commonality: the single-seat Rafale C, two-seat Rafale B, and carrier-capable Rafale M.

VariantConfigurationDesignation notes
Rafale CAir force single-seat variant

Dassault identifies the Rafale C as the single-seat French Air Force variant with mission capabilities closely aligned to the B and M models.

Rafale BAir force two-seat variant

Dassault identifies the Rafale B as the two-seat French Air Force variant, sharing maximum airframe and equipment commonality with the C and M.
