Direct proof of use
Mi-8/17-family helicopters were operated by the Syrian Arab Air Force during the 2011 Syrian Civil War. Oryx described Syria's Hip fleet as flying transport and casualty-evacuation missions to isolated garrisons, improvised bombing missions, and specialized electronic-warfare roles.
The OPCW Investigation and Identification Team also attributed specific chlorine-cylinder attacks to Syrian Arab Air Force Mi-8/17 helicopters. Its Douma report found reasonable grounds that at least one Mi-8/17 from Dumayr airbase dropped two yellow cylinders on 7 April 2018, and its Kafr Zeita report found reasonable grounds that a Mi-8/17 from Hama Airbase dropped at least one yellow pressurized cylinder on 1 October 2016.

Operational roles
The documented Syrian government use combined ordinary helicopter mobility with adapted combat roles. Oryx reported that Mi-8/17s linked regime-held territory with army garrisons that road movements could not reach, moving reinforcements in and wounded personnel out.
The same reporting identified improvised bombing as a main wartime task for Syria's Mi-8/17s and noted that several Hip helicopters had been upgraded for special-purpose roles. GPPi's Syrian Air Force study described a modified detachment of SyAAF Mi-8/17 helicopters carrying explosive and shrapnel-filled barrels, and linked Syrian air force helicopters to improvised chlorine-filled munitions.

Dated incidents
On 1 October 2016 near Kafr Zeita, the OPCW IIT concluded that a Syrian Arab Air Force Mi-8/17 helicopter operating from Hama Airbase and under Tiger Forces control dropped a yellow pressurized cylinder that released chlorine gas near the Wadi al-Aanz cave system.
On 7 April 2018 in Douma, the OPCW IIT concluded that at least one Syrian Arab Air Force Mi-8/17 helicopter from Dumayr airbase, also under Tiger Forces control, dropped two yellow cylinders that struck residential buildings. The report said the chlorine release at one location killed 43 named individuals and affected dozens more.

Evidence boundaries
The sources support Syrian government-side operation of the Mi-8/17 family in transport, evacuation, improvised bombing, electronic-warfare, and chlorine-cylinder delivery roles. They do not establish that every Mi-8 or Mi-17 airframe in Syrian service carried all mission equipment or performed every role.
The OPCW findings are cited here as attributed investigative conclusions about specific incidents. Broader bombing and special-purpose role claims are tied to Oryx and GPPi reporting rather than treated as a complete sortie count for the war.
