Carrier Strike Group Role

Official coalition reporting frames Charles de Gaulle as both a launch platform and a command node. In December 2015 it served as the flagship for Commander Task Force 50 during Arabian Gulf missions against ISIL, and in March 2019 its strike group arrived off Syria for Operation Inherent Resolve. French Ministry reporting identifies Operation Chammal as France's component of Inherent Resolve and says the carrier group reinforced Chammal eight times between January 2015 and December 2022.

Strike aviation

U.S. Navy and CENTCOM reports identify Rafale Marine aircraft operating from the carrier during anti-ISIS missions.

Airborne control

CENTCOM also identified Hawkeye aircraft from Charles de Gaulle gathering intelligence and supporting coalition troops on the ground.

Task-force command

The 2015 U.S. Navy account placed the ship at the center of CTF 50 naval strike operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area.
