The Horizon class is a French-Italian air-defense frigate/destroyer family built by Naval Group and Fincantieri for the French and Italian navies. The four 153-meter ships center on PAAMS, Aster missiles, long-range surveillance radar, and fleet air-defense command-and-control, with Chevalier Paul directly documented in Libya's 2011 intervention and as a Charles de Gaulle carrier-group escort during anti-ISIS operations.

Air-Defense Fit

The Horizon ships are built around fleet air defense rather than general-purpose patrol work. Naval Group describes them as front-line anti-air warfare ships for airspace control, air-defense command and control, and anti-air cover for carrier groups and convoys.

PAAMS and Aster

OCCAR describes PAAMS as a 360-degree naval air-defense system with long-range surveillance radar, multifunction fire-control radar, vertical launchers, and Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles.

National ship labels

French sources use air-defense frigate terminology for Forbin and Chevalier Paul; Italian sources group Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio as Orizzonte-class guided-missile destroyers.

Mid-life upgrade

OCCAR says the MLU entered its operative phase in July 2023, with AAW and EW integration planned across Italian and French ships through about 2030.

Variants

The same four-ship Horizon programme is described differently by national services: France presents Forbin and Chevalier Paul as frégates de défense aérienne, while Italy presents Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio as Orizzonte-class guided-missile destroyers.
