The La Fayette class is France's five-ship FLF stealth-frigate family, developed and built at DCN's Lorient yard for reduced signatures, long-range patrol, escort, crisis-response, and maritime-surveillance missions. The French ships introduced a 125-meter, 3,600-tonne design with Exocet missiles, a helicopter hangar, and a small crew, while source-backed operations include Libya 2011 naval gunfire and EU NAVFOR counter-piracy patrols.

Design Snapshot

The French FLF design balanced reduced signatures with patrol endurance and a helicopter-capable frigate hull. Its clean superstructure, inclined surfaces, covered deck fittings, radar-absorbent materials, decoys, and acoustic measures supported the low-observable design goal, while later refits added anti-submarine capacity to three ships.

Signature approach

Specialist references describe the class around reduced radar, infrared, magnetic, and acoustic signatures rather than a single stealth feature.

French full-upgrade ships

La Fayette, Courbet, and Aconit received the main renovation and upgrade package, including hull-sonar integration and refreshed air-defense equipment.

Export design line

Saudi Al Riyadh, Singapore Formidable, and Taiwan Kang Ding ships are treated here as La Fayette-family derivatives because they changed combat fit and roles for different navies.

Variants

The core French FLF class consists of five ships. The same design line also produced larger or modified export derivatives for Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Taiwan.
