Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The 2S12 Sani family is directly tied to the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through OSCE Special Monitoring Mission reports from the Donbas phase and later full-scale-invasion evidence. On 4 March 2018, an OSCE mini-UAV observed four 2B11 Sani 120 mm mortars in firing positions about 2 km south-east of Vesela Hora, a non-government-controlled area north of Luhansk, with military trucks nearby that the mission assessed as carrying mortar ammunition crates.

The OSCE recorded another non-government-controlled sighting on 27 July 2018, when a mini-UAV spotted three probable 2B11/2S12 Sani mortars in firing positions on the southern edge of Donetskyi, west of Luhansk. The mission also documented a Ukrainian-side case on 12 August 2019, when a mini-UAV spotted a 2B11 Sani 120 mm mortar in government-controlled Hnutove.

Full-scale invasion evidence

After Russia's February 2022 full-scale invasion, the system appeared in capture, loss, and production-supply records. ArmyInform, an outlet of Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, reported on 4 October 2022 that Ukrainian troops captured a Russian 2B11 mortar from the modernized 2S12A Sani complex during a counteroffensive, along with mortar ammunition; the report noted that the related transport vehicle had not been confirmed captured in that case.

Oryx's visually confirmed Russian equipment-loss list separately records thirteen destroyed 2F510 transport vehicles for the 2S12 Sani mortar on the Ural-43206 chassis. In July 2024, Rostec announced new deliveries of upgraded 2S12A Sani systems and 2B11 mortars to Russia's Ministry of Defence, while Army Recognition described the delivery as going to Russian forces in Ukraine and placed the system in the Ukrainian-conflict context.

Role in the conflict

The documented cases place the 2S12/2B11 family in a conventional fire-support role. The pre-2022 OSCE reports treated 2B11 and probable 2B11/2S12 Sani mortars as heavy weapons observed in violation of withdrawal lines, including firing-position sightings in non-government-controlled Luhansk-region areas and a government-controlled Hnutove sighting.

The later evidence is strongest for Russian-side full-scale-invasion use and attrition. ArmyInform's October 2022 report describes a captured Russian 2S12A/2B11 mortar, Oryx records destroyed Russian 2F510 transport vehicles tied to the Sani system, and the 2024 Rostec delivery was reported in explicit Ukraine-war context by Army Recognition.
