Separate July 2026 reporting described Russian troops apparently trying to adapt a YakB-12.7 outside its normal helicopter installation. The Times reported that video appeared to show the weapon, repurposed from an attack helicopter and fired from the back of a truck, spinning out of control during a Russian anti-aircraft experiment.
The Times of India reported the same viral live-fire incident as a Russian training exercise involving a YakB-12.7 heavy machine gun, noting that the date and location were not independently verified and that there were no reported casualties. The report also described the weapon as a four-barrel 12.7 mm rotary gun developed for the Mi-24 Hind and designed for aerial use rather than ground-based firing.

Role in the conflict
The Yak-B's conflict role is therefore narrower than a general-purpose heavy-machine-gun role. On Ukraine's side, the weapon appears in its original aircraft-gun context on Mi-24V helicopters, used against slow, low-flying Shahed-type drones.
