The Type 051B, also called the Luhai class, is a single-ship Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy guided-missile destroyer class built around Shenzhen (DDG 167). Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company built the experimental, modular destroyer as a bridge toward later PLAN surface combatants, and Shenzhen is directly documented in China's 2009 Gulf of Aden counter-piracy escort mission.

Role in Conflicts

Class Snapshot

The Type 051B / Luhai class is best understood as one experimental destroyer rather than a production family. Shenzhen combined a larger indigenous hull, fleet-command ambitions, and later refit work that made the ship a visible bridge between older PLAN destroyers and later air-defense surface combatants.

Ship count

One completed hull: Shenzhen (DDG 167).

Builder

Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company.

Service proof

Documented in the 2009 Gulf of Aden counter-piracy escort mission.

Modernized fit

Public reporting describes VLS air-defense, close-in defense, sensor upgrades, and later YJ-12 launchers.

Missile Fit

Published references describe Shenzhen's missile outfit changing from its original canister-launched anti-ship and point-defense fit to a modernized VLS air-defense and heavier anti-ship loadout.
