T-34/85 Tank in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War

T-34/85 use in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War is documented as exceptional monument-vehicle reuse: an LPR-linked Antratsyt tank was recovered and moved under its own power in 2014, and a Lysychansk pedestal tank was likely used by Ukrainian forces as a roadblock in 2022.

Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The T-34/85 appears in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through exceptional reuse of monument vehicles rather than normal front-line tank employment. Tank Encyclopedia documents a T-34/85 removed from a monument in Antratsyt, Luhansk Oblast, inspected by Luhansk People's Republic-aligned Cossack National Guard personnel in July 2014, modified, and later shown moving in Perevalsk in November 2014.

Militarnyi separately reported that a T-34/85 removed from a pedestal in Lysychansk was likely used by Ukrainian forces in July 2022 to block a road during the battle for the city. The available direct sources support recovery, fielding, movement, and obstacle use; they do not establish routine direct-fire tank combat by the T-34/85 in this conflict.

Dated appearances

The first documented conflict-linked case began in Antratsyt on 6 July 2014, when armed personnel removed or prepared to remove the monument tank after checking its condition. Tank Encyclopedia places the vehicle's later public movement in Perevalsk in early November 2014, where it was filmed operating near the local history museum after improvised work.

The second documented case came during the 2022 battle for Lysychansk. Militarnyi reported on 12 July 2022 that the city's T-34/85 monument tank, number 227, had been used or likely used by Ukrainian forces as a road obstacle against advancing Russian mechanized forces.

Role in the conflict

The Antratsyt vehicle was a symbolic and improvised armored asset for Luhansk separatist-aligned forces at a moment when the breakaway administration had little armor of its own. Tank Encyclopedia says the tank was treated as suitable for emergency service, overhauled, fitted with improvised protection, and later returned to a monument role after newer armored vehicles became available.

The Lysychansk case was different: the tank's reported value was as a physical obstacle, not as a mobile gun tank. The source-backed role is therefore defensive holding or obstruction, with the T-34/85's monument status central to why the vehicle appeared at all.
