Combat System And Missions

The class is a French SSN program rather than a single-weapon launch platform. Official sources describe missions that include intelligence collection, naval force support, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, land attack with MdCN, and special-forces deployment.

Strike path

The Suffren class gives French submarines a conventional deep-strike option with MdCN, alongside SM39 anti-ship missiles and F21 heavyweight torpedoes.

Sensors

Marine nationale data lists Sycobs, optronic masts, bow sonar, flank arrays, a towed very-low-frequency listening array, and mine-avoidance sonar.

Service status

By June 2026 four boats had been delivered, with Suffren, Duguay-Trouin, and Tourville already admitted to active service.

Launched Weapons

The class's fitted weapons give it long-range strike and conventional undersea attack options.

MBDA describes the weapon as a very-long-range, metric-accuracy deep-strike missile launched either from A70 SYLVER vertical cells or 21-inch submarine torpedo tubes, and French forces used it operationally during the April 2018 U.S., UK, and French strikes in the 2011 Syrian Civil War.

Built at Barrow-in-Furness by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering, the class carries Trident II D5 missiles, remains in service as the UK's single nuclear delivery platform, and is being sustained until Dreadnought-class submarines replace it in the 2030s.

The class was built around a carrier-strike mission with 24 P-700 Granit anti-ship missiles in side launchers, a large double-hull SSGN design, long endurance, and improved crew habitability; later Project 949AM modernization reporting centers on replacing the Granit fit with newer cruise missiles.

The class carries a D-9RM missile system with 16 R-29RM-family SLBMs, four 533 mm torpedo tubes, and modernized Sineva/Layner-era missiles; public sources distinguish the seven boats built from smaller operational counts as individual hulls cycle through overhaul or replacement by Borei-class SSBNs.
