Documented Use

Direct proof of use

Sniper rifles are directly documented in the 2003 Iraq War through official U.S. military reporting and imagery. The U.S. Army reported that Sgt. 1st Class Brandon McGuire, a platoon sergeant with 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, used a Barrett .50-caliber Sniper Weapon System near Forward Operating Base Iskandaryia after his unit was ordered to locate and destroy an insurgent mortar team.

Other official records show sniper rifles in observation, pre-operation, and training roles. DVIDS imagery documented a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier conducting rehearsal and pre-operation confirmation on an MK12 sniper rifle at Rawah in September 2007, and a Marine scout sniper observing a suspected improvised explosive device factory through an M-40 sniper rifle near Bahkit in July 2008.

Timeline

The sourced record begins with Marine M40A1 rifles in Al Anbar in late 2004 and widens into U.S. Army, Special Forces, Marine, and Iraqi Army records through 2009. A National Archives public-domain record shows a Marine sniper firing a Remington M40A1 during security and stabilization operations in Al Anbar on 2004-12-30.

In June 2006, Marine scout snipers near Habbaniyah killed an insurgent sniper and recovered an M-40A1 rifle that DVIDS reported had been taken from Marines killed in Ramadi in 2004. In May 2006, a DVIDS image record also documented U.S. instruction of an Iraqi Army soldier on a Barrett M-107 sniper rifle during joint weapons training in Tall Afar. By October 2009, DVIDS imagery showed Iraqi Army snipers pulling rear security with Dragunov sniper rifles during patrol training in Kirkuk.

Operational role

The documented U.S. use maps primarily to precision fire, reconnaissance, observation, force protection, and counter-sniper activity. The Army Iskandaryia account describes a sniper team supporting a mission against a mortar-team threat after repeated attacks on a road, while the Bahkit image documents a Marine scout sniper using an M-40 during observation of a suspected IED factory.

The available sources also distinguish possession, training, and use. Iraqi government forces are documented training with Barrett M-107 and Dragunov sniper rifles, but the cited records do not show those Iraqi Army trainees firing in combat. Insurgent-side evidence includes the Habbaniyah case, where DVIDS reported that an insurgent gunman was preparing to use a captured Marine M-40A1 rifle when a Marine sniper team killed him and recovered the weapon.
