Direct proof of use
The S-200 / SA-5 Gammon is documented in the 2011 Syrian Civil War through Syrian government air-defense launches against Israeli and coalition strike activity. CSIS Missile Threat records Syrian S-200 launches on March 17, 2017, after an Israeli strike on a weapons convoy linked to Hezbollah, and a separate October 16, 2017 launch at Israeli aircraft flying over Lebanon.
The clearest incident was the September 17, 2018 Latakia shootdown. CSIS reported that a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft was shot down off Latakia by a Syrian S-200 air-defense system while Israeli aircraft were striking nearby targets. VOA later summarized the Russian account that the older S-200 could not distinguish the Russian aircraft as friendly, while Israel attributed the loss to Syrian anti-aircraft fire after Israeli aircraft had already returned to Israeli airspace.

Timeline
Publicly documented Syrian S-200 use escalated in 2017. CSIS describes two 5V21 missiles fired from repaired S-200 systems on March 17, 2017, after an Israeli airstrike, and another Syrian S-200 launch on October 16, 2017, at Israeli aircraft flying reconnaissance over Lebanon; in both cases, the missiles did not hit the intended aircraft.
During the April 14, 2018 U.S., UK, and French strike phase, Russian and regional reporting said Syrian air defenses used Soviet- and Russian-made systems including the S-200. U.S. Central Command assessed more than 40 Syrian surface-to-air missile launches but said no coalition aircraft or missiles were successfully engaged and that most launches occurred after the final coalition impact.

Narrative
In Syrian service, the S-200 functioned as a strategic air-defense weapon around government-controlled air-defense networks rather than a mobile front-line system. Its wartime record in the available sources is concentrated in strike-response episodes: launches after Israeli operations, the April 2018 response to U.S., UK, and French missile strikes, and the Latakia incident during an Israeli strike near Russian operating areas.
The evidence separates launch activity from successful engagement. Syrian and Russian accounts claimed stronger interception performance in some episodes, especially after the April 2018 coalition strikes. U.S. officials rejected that assessment for the coalition operation, saying Syrian defenses did not successfully engage coalition aircraft or missiles. The September 2018 Il-20 loss is different: the documented S-200 hit a Russian aircraft, not the Israeli aircraft Syrian defenses were responding to.
The S-200 record therefore shows continuing Syrian government fielding of legacy long-range air-defense systems deep into the war, with meaningful operational and political consequences even when the missiles failed to stop the intended strike aircraft.
