Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The Panavia Tornado is documented in the Yemen war through the Royal Saudi Air Force's participation in Saudi-led coalition operations. Arab News, citing the Saudi Press Agency and coalition spokesman Turki Al-Maliki, reported that a Royal Saudi Air Force Tornado crashed in Yemen's al-Jawf province at 11:45 p.m. on 14 February 2020 while flying close air support for Yemeni National Army units.

Al Jazeera independently reported the coalition confirmation and said the Tornado went down during an operation to support Yemeni government forces. The Guardian also reported that the Tornado came down in northern al-Jawf during an operation to assist Yemeni forces, while noting the Houthi claim that the aircraft had been downed.

Timeline

The Saudi-led coalition entered Yemen's civil war in March 2015 with an air campaign backing the internationally recognized government. The Yemen Data Project describes its first dataset as covering aerial bombardments in Yemen from March 2015 to April 2022 by the military coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

On 14 February 2020, the coalition's public account placed a Royal Saudi Air Force Tornado on a close-air-support mission in al-Jawf. The next day, reporting from Arab News, Al Jazeera, and The Guardian recorded the aircraft loss and the Houthi claim that it had been shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

Operational role

The public Tornado-specific evidence points to Saudi use of the aircraft as part of the coalition air component, including close air support for Yemeni government-aligned forces in northern Yemen. The sources do not identify the munition carried by the aircraft in the al-Jawf incident, so the conflict-use record should be treated as aircraft employment rather than proof of a specific air-launched weapon.

Panavia's Saudi Arabia profile provides the acquisition background for the Royal Saudi Air Force Tornado fleet, including the Al Yamamah I order for 48 Tornado IDS aircraft and 24 ADVs, followed by a further 48 Tornado IDS aircraft under Al Yamamah II. That export background explains how the Saudi fleet was available for later coalition operations, but the Yemen-use claim rests on the 2020 conflict reporting.
