Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The Mirage 2000 appeared in the 2014 Yemen Civil War through United Arab Emirates Air Force participation in the Saudi-led coalition air campaign. Washington Institute analysis of the opening phase of Operation Decisive Storm listed about 30 UAE strike aircraft, including F-16s and Mirage 2000s, among the coalition aircraft operating after the March 26, 2015 launch of air operations.

A later incident gave aircraft-specific confirmation. Defense News reported that a Saudi-led coalition statement identified a crashed UAE fighter as a French-made Dassault Mirage 2000-9 participating in Yemen operations. Air & Space Forces Magazine separately reported that two UAE airmen were killed when their Dassault Mirage crashed during combat operations in Yemen as part of Operation Restoring Hope.

Timeline

On March 26, 2015, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar launched Operation Decisive Storm after President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi requested military intervention. Washington Institute analysis described the early coalition air package as including UAE F-16s and Mirage 2000s.

On March 14, 2016, a UAE Mirage crashed near Aden during coalition operations. The coalition and Saudi state reporting described the crash as caused by a technical fault; The Independent later reported disputed claims from sources that AQAP had brought down the aircraft with a surface-to-air missile.

Coalition air-campaign role

In Yemen, the documented Mirage 2000 operator was the United Arab Emirates, fighting on the side of Yemen's internationally recognized government and the Saudi-led coalition. The public record supports use of the Mirage 2000-9 as a coalition fast jet in the air campaign, including participation in Operation Restoring Hope missions, but it does not provide a complete sortie-by-sortie record for individual Mirage 2000 attacks.

The available reporting places the aircraft in a broader UAE air package that also used F-16 Block 60 fighters. Defense News reported that UAE Mirage 2000-9s and F-16 Block 60s operated in Operation Restoring Hope missions over Yemen, along with logistical and transport aircraft.

The March 2016 crash occurred amid fighting around Aden involving coalition aircraft and helicopters. Defense News reported local fighting against al-Qaida militants in Aden and an air raid near the crash site, while The National and Air & Space Forces Magazine tied the two killed UAE pilots to Operation Restoring Hope. The cause remained contested in public reporting: coalition-linked accounts cited a technical fault, while The Independent reported sources claiming a surface-to-air missile shootdown.
