Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The GAU-21 is directly documented in the 2003 Iraq War through Marine Corps reporting and a DVIDS image record from Al Asad, Iraq. On May 16, 2006, Cpl. Thomas D. Martinez of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463 fired a GAU-21 ramp-mounted weapon system at a makeshift target outside Al Asad while Cpl. Mitchell C. J. Harquail acted as assistant gunner.

A 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing article published five days later described HMH-463 as the first CH-53D squadron to install the GAU-21 .50-caliber machine-gun system on its aircraft. The same article framed the weapon as a tail-ramp gun for rear and side coverage on CH-53D Sea Stallions in Iraq.

Timeline

NAVAIR announced the U.S. Navy GAU-21 contract in January 2004, describing the weapon as the U.S. Navy configuration of FN Herstal's M3M and listing CH-53 ramp mounting among the planned aircraft integrations.

HMH-463 arrived at Al Asad in March 2006 with CH-53D Sea Stallions. By May 2006, Marine Corps and DVIDS material documented the squadron test-firing the GAU-21 from the CH-53D ramp in Iraq.

Role in Iraq

The documented Iraq role was force protection for Marine assault-support helicopters rather than independent ground use. HMH-463 crew members described the GAU-21 tail gun as a way to cover the rear and sides of the CH-53D, complementing window guns that did not cover the full rear arc.

The Iraq evidence identifies U.S. Marines as the operator, places the weapon at Al Asad, and ties it to CH-53D ramp-mounted defensive fire. The available public sources support fielding and test firing in the Iraq theater; they do not establish a specific engagement against opposing forces.
