Direct proof of use
Conflict Armament Research directly documented explosively formed projectile devices in the 2014 Yemen Civil War in a March 2018 report on radio-controlled, passive-infrared-initiated IEDs. CAR stated that since the start of the current Yemen conflict, Ansar Allah, or Houthi, forces had employed landmines and IEDs and that recovered IEDs in Yemen featured EFPs camouflaged to resemble natural rocks.
The report placed the devices in the west-coast fighting. CAR said it had documented dozens of synthetic-rock-concealed IEDs and that, since 2016, Houthi forces had emplaced them along motorways connecting Mokha with Dhubab, Taiz, and Khawkha. One CAR-examined device recovered north of Mokha contained three EFP main charges.

Timeline
The public record begins with CAR's statement that Houthi forces had emplaced synthetic-rock-concealed IEDs along west-coast roads since 2016. CAR illustrated the conflict-use chain with a device recovered by Arab Coalition forces near Mokha in April 2017 and with a later CAR field investigation in Mokha in January 2018.
On March 26, 2018, CAR published its RCIED perspective on Yemen. Defense News and Associated Press reporting the same day described the CAR findings as roadside bombs disguised as rocks and said the Yemen devices included explosively formed projectile varieties able to penetrate armored vehicles. Washington Institute analysis then summarized the CAR report as Houthi EFP arrays with one to three warheads, disguised as rocks, and increasingly common on Yemeni fronts.

Narrative
Within the Yemen conflict, the documented role of the EFP IED was anti-armor and route-denial use by Houthi-aligned forces. The available source set identifies roadside emplacement and recovery on west-coast road axes rather than a named attack, casualty event, or individual Houthi unit. The devices therefore support a conflict-use record of fielding and emplacement in a battlefield area, not a specific dated strike.
The devices were part of a broader Houthi IED and mine pattern on Yemen's west coast. CAR's 2018 publication treated the EFP-bearing RCIEDs as more sophisticated than many locally improvised mines, emphasizing standardized components and similarities to devices recovered elsewhere in the region. Washington Institute analysis drew the same operational implication: such arrays threatened coalition-backed Yemeni and Gulf forces attempting to advance against Houthi-held positions.
Attribution of supply and technology is a separate claim from battlefield use. CAR assessed that multiple strands of component evidence suggested Iranian transfer of technology and materiel to Houthi forces for RCIED construction, while AP-distributed reporting noted Iran denied supplying arms to the Houthis. The direct Yemen-use claim does not depend on that attribution; it rests on CAR's field documentation of EFP-bearing IEDs recovered from Houthi forces and deployed on Yemen's west coast.
