Armenian/Artsakh forces fielded BRM-1K reconnaissance vehicles during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war; Oryx visually documented five BRM-1K losses, including vehicles destroyed by TB2 UAVs or Spike ATGMs and others captured by Azerbaijani forces.

The BRM-1K is a Soviet tracked armored reconnaissance vehicle derived from the BMP-1 chassis, combining amphibious mobility with battlefield surveillance equipment and a 73 mm 2A28 cannon. Russia later modernized the type as the BRM-1KM/BRM-1K Model 2021 with a BTR-82A-style combat compartment, 30 mm 2A72 armament, updated communications, and newer reconnaissance equipment; both legacy and modernized vehicles are visually documented in post-Soviet conflicts.
Role in Conflicts
Oryx listed BRM-1K reconnaissance vehicles in the Yemeni Army inventory before the Houthi takeover and described that inventory as equipment available to Yemeni battlefield parties during the ongoing 2014 Yemen Civil War; the source does not identify a specific unit, battle, or loss.
Role detailsRussian forces fielded BRM-1(K) and modernized BRM-1KM reconnaissance vehicles after the 2022 full-scale invasion; Oryx visually documented destroyed, abandoned, and captured examples, including BRM-1KM and BRM-1KM 675-sb3KDZ variants.

BRM-1KM Modernization
The BRM-1KM, also described in English-language references as BRM-1K Model 2021 or Model 2022, is a modernization of the BRM-1K family rather than a separate clean-sheet reconnaissance vehicle. The upgrade kept the BMP-1-derived tracked hull but changed the fighting compartment, firepower, radios, onboard electronics, navigation, and reconnaissance equipment.
The modernization replaced the 73 mm 2A28 Grom fit with a BTR-82A-style combat compartment carrying a 2A72 30 mm automatic cannon and PKTM coaxial machine gun.
Army Recognition describes the upgraded vehicle with a 1L111M-1 J-band ground-surveillance radar, updated radios, fire-control equipment, laser range finder, NBC protection, and surveillance devices.
Oryx separates Russian losses of legacy BRM-1(K), BRM-1KM, and BRM-1KM 675-sb3KDZ vehicles in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War, showing that the modernization appears as its own identifiable battlefield category.

Variants
The BRM-1K family covers the Soviet reconnaissance vehicle and later modernization packages that retain the BMP-1-derived hull while changing sensors, communications, and armament.
| Variant | Configuration | Designation notes |
|---|---|---|
| BRM-1KM / BRM-1K Model 2021 | Russian modernization with 30 mm armament | The modernized vehicle replaces the older combat compartment with a BTR-82A-type weapon station carrying a 2A72 30 mm automatic cannon and PKTM machine gun, and adds updated engine, communications, onboard electronics, navigation, reconnaissance, and surveillance equipment. Compatible Ammunition
BRM-1K mounts the 2A28 Grom cannon and a PKT coaxial machine gun, linking it to both 73 mm cannon ammunition and 7.62x54mmR machine-gun cartridges.

|---|---|---|
