Direct proof of use
The AN/TWQ-1 Avenger was fielded by U.S. forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance records March/April 2003 deployment of Avenger systems for air and ground security, and a Redstone Arsenal deployment-support article states that the initial Iraq campaign was supported by five active-duty units with more than 125 Avenger systems.
The same Redstone account says U.S. Marine Corps Low Altitude Air Defense battalions also served in Operation Iraqi Freedom with Avengers, alongside Army Avenger units. It describes Avengers in Iraq as widely used for armed convoy escort, checkpoint security, and perimeter defense when the air threat was limited.

Timeline
Avenger systems entered the Iraq War with the opening phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March and April 2003. Public deployment-support data later summarized that the Army initial effort included over 125 systems, and that the larger OIF/OEF total included roughly 300 Avengers with most supporting OIF in Iraq.
In early 2005, the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment requested a force-protection modification for its second Iraq rotation. The Gun-Up kit moved the M3P .50-caliber machine gun higher on the turret and replaced the right Stinger missile pod, giving the gun a less restricted field of fire over the vehicle cab. MDAA dates the Iraq conversion to April 2005, while the Redstone account says all eight 3rd ACR fire units were modified in Kuwait in March 2005 before rotation to OIF.

Narrative
The Iraq War use of the Avenger shows a system assigned to its original short-range air-defense mission but frequently employed for ground force protection. Redstone's deployment-support summary says the system could engage aerial or ground targets while stationary or moving and that, lacking a major air threat, Avenger units were used extensively in ground combat support roles.
The Gun-Up Avenger was the clearest Iraq-specific adaptation. It traded one missile pod for a better-positioned M3P gun and larger ready ammunition capacity, turning the Avenger into a more useful base-security and convoy-protection asset while retaining its air-defense identity. After the 3rd ACR rotation, the eight Gun-Up/STC systems remained in Iraq as stay-behind equipment for another air-defense unit.
A 2008 DVIDS report from Forward Operating Base Falcon in Baghdad gives a unit-level example of Avenger personnel within Iraq base defense. It identifies an Avenger crewmember from Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, attached to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, and describes his radar-observation work as part of the base defense system.
