AIM-120C/D AMRAAM air-to-air missile in the 2014 Yemen Civil War

Royal Saudi Air Force fighters are documented using AIM-120C-family AMRAAM missiles to intercept Houthi UAV attacks during the Yemen war; public sources identify AIM-120C use, not AIM-120D firing.

Documented Use

Direct proof of use

Saudi use of AIM-120C-family AMRAAMs in the Yemen-war context is documented through U.S. arms-sale statements and defense reporting. The War Zone reported in November 2021 that Royal Saudi Air Force fighters had been using AIM-120 missiles to shoot down drones launched by Houthi forces from Yemen, and cited a U.S. State Department statement that Saudi AIM-120C missiles deployed from Saudi aircraft had been instrumental in intercepting cross-border attacks.

CSIS later summarized the same defensive role, writing that AIM-120C missiles deployed from Saudi aircraft had been used to intercept persistent UAV attacks against Saudi Arabia. The available public sources support AIM-120C-family use by Saudi aircraft; they do not show an AIM-120D firing in this conflict.

Timeline

From January 2016 through October 2021, CSIS counted 4,103 Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, inside Yemen, and against other Gulf targets, giving the broader UAV and missile-threat context for Saudi defensive interceptions.

On November 4, 2021, the United States notified Congress of a proposed Saudi purchase of 280 AIM-120C-7/C-8 AMRAAMs and 596 LAU-128 launch rails. The notice said the missiles would increase Saudi stocks for its fighter fleet, including Eurofighter Typhoon, F-15C/D, F-15S, and F-15SA aircraft.

Narrative

The documented role was defensive counter-UAV interception rather than air-to-ground attack. Defense News reported that a U.S. State Department spokesperson described the proposed AIM-120C sale as a response to increased cross-border attacks by Iranian-backed Houthi fighters and said the missile had been used against drones threatening U.S. troops and Saudi civilians.

The replenishment package also clarifies the variant level visible in public records. The Federal Register notice named AIM-120C-7/C-8 missiles and described the AIM-120C-8 as a refresh of the AIM-120C-7. For this C/D catalog entry, the Yemen evidence therefore supports the AIM-120C side of the family and should not be read as direct evidence of AIM-120D combat use.
