Documented Use

Direct proof of use

Official U.S. Navy imagery from July 2016 identified an AH-1Z Viper assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit patrolling near USS Boxer while Boxer and the embarked 13th MEU were deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

A DVIDS image from the same deployment placed an AH-1Z Viper on USS Boxer's flight deck in the Arabian Gulf on July 13, 2016, again identifying the aircraft as assigned to the 13th MEU and the ship as deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

2016 deployment context

The Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and 13th MEU entered the 5th Fleet area on April 5, 2016, to provide forward naval presence in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, maritime-security operations, and theater-cooperation work. NAVCENT reported that, during this period, the ARG/MEU logged 2,288 flight hours and 1,756 sorties; the same article separately attributed OIR strike ordnance expenditure to AV-8B Harriers rather than to the AH-1Z.

Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, which had completed its transition to the AH-1Z and UH-1Y in 2012, states in its official unit history that elements of the squadron participated in Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria from June to July 2016.

Documented role

The public evidence supports a coalition force-protection and aviation-support role for the AH-1Z in this conflict, with the aircraft photographed conducting patrol and shipboard flight-deck operations during the Boxer ARG and 13th MEU's OIR support period.

The AH-1Z's general Marine Corps mission set includes offensive air support, armed escort, aerial reconnaissance, and supporting-arms coordination, but the conflict-specific sources used here document deployment and patrol activity rather than a named AH-1Z weapons engagement against Islamic State targets.
