Documented Use
Main Israeli attack aircraft
The Israeli Air Force describes the A-4 Skyhawk as the main attack plane during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, which makes the type one of the conflict's most important strike aircraft in Israeli service.
That role fits the Skyhawk's compact carrier-born design: a light, single-seat attack aircraft optimized for hauling bombs and other ordnance rather than air-to-air fighting.
Southern front sortie burden
An Israeli Air Force retrospective says Skyhawk crews flew about 1,000 operational sorties on the southern front during the war.
That sortie count shows how heavily Israel leaned on the A-4 for ground attack while the conflict moved through its opening Egyptian and Syrian offensives and the subsequent Israeli counterattacks.
