Direct proof of use
Krasnopol-family laser-guided artillery projectiles were documented in the 2011 Syrian Civil War through investigations of northwest Syria strikes and reporting on Russian/Syrian government artillery tactics. Syrian Archive reported that a Syrian Civil Defence center and a medical facility were hit in June and September 2021 by projectiles launched from a Krasnopol artillery weapon system, and assessed Syrian and Russian government forces stationed in southern Idlib countryside as responsible for the incidents.
Syrians for Truth and Justice separately reported that Russian forces relied heavily on Russian-developed Krasnopol laser-guided artillery shells during June-July 2021 attacks in Idlib, with Russian and Syrian government forces launching attacks from a jointly controlled base near Basakla. Human Rights Watch also cited other Idlib attacks in which Syrian government or Russian forces used Russian-made Krasnopol laser-guided projectiles, including Taftanaz and Afes strikes reported by Syria Civil Defence in November 2021.

Public reporting placed Krasnopol in Syrian use before the 2021 Idlib investigations. Syrian Archive cited reporting that possible Krasnopol use was announced in Syria in late summer 2016 and shown in use in November 2017, while AIN described Russian UAV-assisted target designation for laser-guided shells during the 2020 Idlib offensive.
The densest open-source documentation in the record is from 2021. Syrian Archive detailed June and September 2021 incidents involving a Civil Defence center and a medical facility, STJ documented six major June-July 2021 Idlib attacks in which field researchers said Krasnopol shells were heavily used, and the White Helmets reported documenting 63 Krasnopol attacks in 2021.

Battlefield role
In Syrian government-aligned service, Krasnopol functioned as a precision artillery munition rather than an area-fire rocket or bomb. The system paired cannon artillery with laser designation, allowing the projectile to home on an illuminated point target during terminal flight. AIN reported that the Russian army used small UAVs to find targets and provide designation for laser-guided shells, and described the Krasnopol round as usable from Russian 2S19 Msta-series howitzers and older 2S3 Akatsiya self-propelled howitzers in Syrian army service.
