Direct proof of use
Direct conflict-use evidence for the 2K12 Kub/Kvadrat family in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War is clearest on Ukraine's side. In March 2023, Slovakia approved an aid package that included Kub air-defense equipment for Ukraine, and European Security & Defence later itemized that package as one 1S91 missile-guidance radar, two 2P25 launchers, 52 3M9ME missiles, and 148 3M9M3E missiles.
Czech transfer reporting followed in May 2023. Ukrainska Pravda, citing Czech President Petr Pavel's Radiozurnal interview, reported that Prague was supplying Kyiv with two 2K12 Kub air-defense missile systems and a relatively large number of missiles. In February 2026, Ukrainska Pravda reported from Air Command Centre material that Ukrainian Defence Forces had adapted Soviet-era Kub systems for Russian Shahed-type attack drones and that a modernized Kub had already shot down five Shahed-type loitering munitions.

Timeline
The documented timeline begins with 2023 transfer decisions during the full-scale invasion phase. Slovakia announced the transfer of two Kub air-defense systems alongside MiG-29 fighters in March 2023, while later Slovak air-defense reporting specified the associated radar, launchers, and 3M9 missile quantities. On May 10, 2023, Czech President Petr Pavel said the Czech Republic was supplying Ukraine with two Kub systems and missiles.
Operational reporting appeared later. On February 1, 2026, Ukrainska Pravda reported that Ukraine had modernized Kub systems by combining the self-propelled surface-to-air missile platform with updated command-and-control solutions and tactics, and that Air Command Centre credited the modernized Kub with five Shahed-type drone shootdowns.

Operational role
In Ukrainian service, the Kub/Kvadrat entry in this conflict is best described as medium-range ground-based air defense reinforced by foreign transfers and adaptation. The system package centers on the tracked launcher and the 1S91 radar/guidance vehicle, with 3M9-series missiles; European Security & Defence's Slovak inventory account and Czech transfer reporting both describe complete or partial Kub-family air-defense packages supplied to Ukraine rather than only loose missiles.
The February 2026 Ukrainian reporting separates earlier transfer evidence from later battlefield use. It describes the Kub as modernized for current Ukrainian air-defense work against Shahed-type attack drones after heavy missile expenditure in 2022-2023, and it places the system on combat duty. The supported role is therefore air defense and force protection against Russian aerial threats, with a documented emphasis on Shahed-type loitering munitions in the 2026 report.
