Direct proof of use
The VAB appears in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War as a French-supplied armored personnel carrier in Ukrainian service. French and open reporting document transfer to Ukraine from 2022 onward, while Ukrainian military reporting covered Ukrainian paratroopers and servicemen using French VAB armored personnel carriers at the front.
The strongest public evidence distinguishes legacy VAB service from later VAB Mk3 evidence. The legacy 4x4 VAB is directly documented as delivered and used for armored troop mobility; the Mk3 evidence is mainly transfer and testing reporting, with open sources noting that the first Ukrainian Mk3 vehicles were not yet deployed in active operations when reported in January 2025.

Transfer timeline
On June 29, 2022, Army Recognition reported that France was delivering VAB 4x4 armored vehicles to Ukraine from French Army stocks, citing a June 28 interview with French defense minister Sebastien Lecornu. The same report quoted the rationale as armored movement for Ukrainian troops through areas under enemy fire.
French government delivery accounting later put a number on the flow of vehicles. A May 2024 Ministry of Armed Forces PDF listed 284 armed and medical VABs delivered to Ukraine between February 24, 2022 and May 1, 2024. AP reporting in March 2024 said France planned further large deliveries of old but operational VAB armored personnel carriers during 2024 and early 2025.
In January 2025, Army Recognition reported that Ukraine may have received six VAB Mk3 vehicles for testing with Ukrainian Sich remote-controlled weapon stations. That report treated the Mk3 vehicles separately from the earlier VABs and stated that they were reportedly undergoing integration testing rather than active deployment.

Operational role
In Ukrainian service, the VAB's documented role is protected mobility: moving infantry and supporting troops under armor near the front. The French defense minister's public rationale emphasized troop mobility along an extensive front line, and the VAB's personnel-carrier configuration matches that role.
The May 2024 French list included both armed and medical VABs, supporting a wider protected-mobility and casualty-evacuation context rather than a single combat-vehicle role. Public sources do not establish a complete Ukrainian order of battle for all VABs, and the sources used here do not support treating the Mk3 test vehicles as confirmed active combat vehicles.
