SPADA 2000 is MBDA's Italian ground-based air-defense system for protecting fixed sites such as air bases, ports, industrial plants, and command infrastructure. It fires ASPIDE 2000 semi-active missiles from a modular detection-centre and firing-section layout, and Spain trained Ukrainian personnel on the Aspide/Spada 2000 battery before sending the system to Ukraine in November 2022.

Role in Conflicts

Spain trained Ukrainian personnel at Zaragoza on the Aspide/Spada 2000 air-defense system and transferred the battery to Ukraine in November 2022. SIPRI records Spain delivering one Spada surface-to-air missile system to Ukraine in 2022 and Aspide missiles for the Spada SAM system, while official Spanish sources usually identify the donated item as an Aspide battery or system.

Battery Architecture

SPADA 2000 is arranged as a distributed point-defense battery rather than a single launcher vehicle. MBDA's configuration separates tactical control, fire control, illumination, and launchers so the defended site can be covered from multiple positions.

Detection centre

The detection centre combines search-and-identification radar with the operational centre in one shelter for tactical control.

Firing sections

A basic SPADA 2000 battery has two firing sections, expandable to four, each built around fire control, tracking and illumination equipment, and launchers.

Layered defense link

MBDA says the system can coordinate up to 10 small anti-air weapons within 10 km and can connect to higher-level national air-defense architecture.

Lineage And Replacement

SPADA 2000 belongs to a longer SPADA/Aspide air-defense line. Italian Air Force material documents the older SPADA family and its 2001 modernization, MBDA identifies ASPIDE 2000 as the upgraded missile compatible with SPADA/ASPIDE systems after modification, and OCCAR identifies MAADS with CAMM-ER as the Italian Air Force replacement path for SPADA/Aspide.
