Sisu XA-180 is the original Finnish Pasi 6x6 armored personnel carrier, designed by Sisu Auto for the Finnish Defence Forces as an amphibious troop carrier with simple maintenance, a two-person crew, and space for an infantry squad. The type later became part of Patria's XA-series support and modernization work, and Ukrainian and defense-media reporting documented XA-180/XA-185-family Pasi vehicles with Ukrainian troops and marines during the full-scale phase of the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War.

Role in Conflicts

SIPRI records a 2022 Finland-to-Ukraine second-hand aid transfer of estimated XA-180/Pasi vehicles, with its external comment identifying the XA-185 version; Defense Express reported Finnish Sisu XA-180 APCs at the front and later described Pasi vehicles in Ukrainian Naval Infantry training and combat context.

Design And Service Notes

The XA-180 sits between cold-war wheeled troop carriers and later modular protected vehicles: it was built for easy operation, road mobility, troop carriage, and water-crossing capability rather than heavy direct combat.

Amphibious mobility

The XA-180/XA-185 branch is described as fully amphibious, with water propulsion by rear propellers on the closely related XA-185 and a Finnish-service XA-180M wading depth listed at 1.80 m.

Troop carrier role

Defense Express describes the Ukrainian-service XA-180 as carrying two crew and sixteen dismounts, and later reported Ukrainian marines training with Pasi vehicles in landing-operation drills.

Upgrade path

The Finnish MLU added communications, electrical, seating, engine, transmission, and axle work, showing how the 1980s design was retained for service life into the 2040s.

Peacekeeping lineage

Army Guide says the first Finnish order reserved nine XA-180s for the Finnish United Nations Battalion, and the current gallery includes Lebanon and IFOR-era XA-180 images.

Variants

The XA-180 was the first 180 kW Pasi-series model; later XA variants adjusted powertrain, armor, mission equipment, or command and radar roles while retaining the Finnish wheeled APC lineage.
