The Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King is the U.S. Navy H-3/S-61 maritime helicopter family built around twin turboshaft engines, an amphibious boat hull, dipping sonar, and carrier-deck folding features. Designed as a Cold War anti-submarine platform, it also became a rescue, utility, minesweeping, astronaut-recovery, and presidential-transport airframe, with direct Vietnam War combat-search-and-rescue documentation and later U.S. Navy service lasting until the last operational UH-3H retirement in 2009.

Mission Adaptability
The SH-3 started as a carrier-based anti-submarine helicopter, but the airframe's cabin volume, amphibious hull, rescue hoist compatibility, and folding rotor made it useful well beyond submarine hunting.
Sikorsky Archives lists dipping sonar, navigation equipment, and four-hour combat endurance for the HSS-2/S-61 mission fit.

| Variant | Configuration | Designation notes |
|---|---|---|
| HSS-2 / SH-3A | Initial U.S. Navy anti-submarine model | The first operational Sea King designation entered fleet service as HSS-2 and became SH-3A under the 1962 tri-service aircraft designation system. Sources: SH-3A Sea King - Naval History and Heritage Command, HSC-6 History |
| HH-3A | Combat search-and-rescue conversion | HC-7 histories identify the HH-3A Sea King as a rescue aircraft used by detachments in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Sources: HSC-85 History |
| SH-3D | Updated anti-submarine model | U.S. Navy squadron history links the SH-3D to improved submarine-detection capability in the 1970s. Sources: HSC-12 History |
| SH-3G / UH-3H | Cargo, utility, and search-and-rescue models | NAVAIR described the final operational U.S. Navy Sea King as a UH-3H used for search-and-rescue and utility missions at Patuxent River. Sources: Sea King helicopter retires from U.S. Navy after 50 years |
