Development And Upgrade Path

Saab's own history frames the Saab 340 AEW&C as part of Sweden's move from a national airborne-surveillance radar program to a command-and-control aircraft. The PS-890/FSR 890 radar line began as a Swedish Armed Forces development order in the mid-1980s, was integrated on Saab 340 airframes for the Argus force, and later evolved into ASC 890 when the system was upgraded into an on-board command center.
