Direct proof of use
Sweden announced on 29 May 2024 that it would send Airborne Surveillance and Control aircraft, designated ASC 890, to Ukraine as part of military support package 16. The Swedish government described the aircraft as a new capability for Ukraine against airborne and maritime targets, paired with training, technical equipment, and methodological support for air surveillance and command and control.
The Sweden-Ukraine security cooperation agreement signed on 31 May 2024 tied the transfer directly to the war by saying Sweden's ASC 890 aircraft would provide Ukraine with airborne surveillance and command-and-control capability and enhance the operational effect of Ukrainian air defense. On 24 August 2025, Ukraine's Ministry of Defence reported that Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal thanked Sweden for delivery of ASC 890 airborne early warning and control aircraft during talks in Kyiv.

Timeline
The public timeline begins with Sweden's May 2024 support-package announcement and security agreement, both of which identified the ASC 890 transfer as an air-domain contribution to Ukraine. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence later acknowledged delivery in August 2025 while discussing aviation cooperation and joint defense production with Sweden.
In March 2026, TWZ reported footage that appeared to show a Saab 340 AEW&C aircraft operating over Ukraine. TWZ cautioned that the video's date, location, and authenticity could not be independently confirmed, so the stronger public record remains transfer, delivery, and intended air-defense integration rather than a fully documented mission history.

Role in Ukrainian service
The Saab 340 AEW&C is an enabling aircraft rather than a strike platform. Swedish government sources describe the Ukraine transfer in terms of long-range identification and engagement support against air and maritime targets, while the bilateral agreement frames it as airborne surveillance and command and control for Ukrainian air defense.
TWZ identified the donated aircraft as Saab 340 AEW&C aircraft equipped with Erieye radar and noted that Sweden's support package placed them at the center of a broader collective air-defense effort. Its analysis described the aircraft as useful for air and sea surveillance, for passing an air-defense picture to compatible aircraft and ground systems, and for supporting Ukraine's integration of Western fighter and air-defense capabilities.
