Direct proof of use
Project 11356R frigates were used by Russia in the Syrian Civil War as Mediterranean launch platforms for Kalibr cruise missiles. On 15 November 2016, Russian reporting and independent defense coverage identified Admiral Grigorovich as firing Kalibr missiles during a Russian-Syrian operation against targets in Idlib and Homs provinces, while USNI News reported that at least three missiles were launched from the eastern Mediterranean as part of the Aleppo offensive.
Admiral Essen, another Project 11356R frigate, was documented in the same role in 2017. Reporting based on Russian Defense Ministry statements said Admiral Essen and the submarine Krasnodar launched four Kalibr missiles near Palmyra in May 2017, and USNI News later reported that Admiral Essen launched three Kalibr missiles from the Mediterranean toward ISIS positions near Deir al-Zor on 5 September 2017.

Timeline
The public record shows a concentrated pattern of Russian naval cruise-missile use from Project 11356R frigates in Syria between late 2016 and 2017. Admiral Grigorovich was first documented in the role on 15 November 2016, during the same period as Russia's carrier and coastal-missile operations around Aleppo, Idlib, and Homs.
Admiral Essen then appeared in several 2017 strike reports. On 31 May 2017, VOA and Anadolu Agency reported that Admiral Essen and Krasnodar fired four Kalibr missiles at targets near Palmyra. On 23 June 2017, RFE/RL and Daily Sabah reported that Admiral Essen, Admiral Grigorovich, and Krasnodar launched six Kalibr missiles at targets in the Aqirbat area of Hama province. On 5 September 2017, USNI News reported another Admiral Essen launch of three Kalibr missiles against targets near Deir al-Zor.

Narrative
The frigates' documented Syria role was long-range land attack from offshore rather than close naval combat. Public sources identify Russian Navy ships in the eastern Mediterranean launching Kalibr missiles toward inland targets while Syrian government forces and Russian aircraft operated on land and in the air.
The named users in the available evidence are Russian Navy vessels supporting the Syrian government and allied side. Admiral Grigorovich was tied to the November 2016 strike sequence, while Admiral Essen was tied to May, June, and September 2017 launches. Several 2017 reports also identify the Project 636.3 submarine Krasnodar as a co-launch platform, which means some salvo totals in public reporting cover mixed frigate-submarine launches rather than missiles fired only by one frigate.
The best supported claims are the presence and use of Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen as Kalibr launch platforms, the Mediterranean launch area, and the reported target areas in Idlib, Homs, Palmyra, Hama, and Deir al-Zor. Source descriptions of target effects come mostly from Russian Defense Ministry statements carried by news agencies and should be read as attributed claims.
