Houthi-aligned forces used one-way attack UAVs during the 2014 Yemen Civil War. Conflict Armament Research documented Qasef-1 UAVs recovered in Yemen and reported that Houthi and Saleh-aligned forces used them to attack Saudi-led coalition Patriot missile-defense radars in Marib and other coalition-held areas.

CSIS describes Houthi rebels using missiles and drones, with Iranian assistance, to strike Arab coalition bases, population centers, and infrastructure. The open sources used here support the class-level use of one-way attack UAVs and identify Qasef-1, Qasef-2K, and Samad-family systems as documented examples rather than a single uniform model.

Timeline

CAR tied early documented Qasef-1 evidence to October and November 2016 incidents in Marib and Aden: a damaged UAV engine from a Marib attack, a Qasef-1 recovered near Aden International Airport, and six partially assembled Qasef-1 UAVs intercepted in Marib Governorate.

On January 10, 2019, a weaponized UAV exploded over senior officers at a military parade near al-Anad airbase, killing members of Saudi-backed Yemeni forces. FPRI assessed the wreckage as consistent with an Iranian Ababil-T/Qasef-1 lineage and described the event as part of a pattern of Houthi drone attacks in Yemen.

Operational role

The UAV role shifted from attacks on coalition air-defense assets to broader long-range pressure on military and infrastructure targets. CAR reported Qasef-1 attacks against Patriot radar sets, a use case aimed at reducing coalition missile-defense coverage before or alongside missile fire.

By 2018 and 2019, public reporting and technical analysis described longer-range Houthi attack UAVs. The Samad flight-performance study says Houthi forces had deployed Samad-2, Samad-3, and a delta-wing design since 2018, while Qasef-1 and Qasef-2K remained shorter-range loitering munitions. The same study notes a 17 August 2019 attack on the Shaybah oil fields in which the UN Panel of Experts inspected a vehicle and identified it as a Samad-3.
