Direct proof of use
The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is directly documented in the 1990 Gulf War through USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and Carrier Air Wing Eight. The U.S. Navy identifies USS Theodore Roosevelt as the fourth Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, and CVW-8's command history says the Theodore Roosevelt / CVW-8 team deployed on December 28, 1990 for Operation Desert Storm after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.
CVW-8's official history records the air wing participating in combat operations in Iraq in support of Operations Desert Storm and Provide Comfort before returning home on June 28, 1991. A Defense Department Gulf War chronology separately records the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier battle group on station in the Persian Gulf region on January 21, 1991.

Combat chronology
The Theodore Roosevelt battle group moved into combat shortly after the start of the air war. DVIDS, citing the command history in a VF-84 Desert Storm account, says Theodore Roosevelt transited the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on January 16, 1991, entered the Persian Gulf on January 19, and launched its first combat strike that evening.
Between January 19 and February 27, DVIDS reports that USS Theodore Roosevelt and Carrier Air Wing Eight launched 3,897 sorties in support of Operation Desert Storm. VAW-124's command history gives a squadron-level example from the same carrier air wing: on January 21, CVW-8 launched its first major Desert Storm strike with VAW-124 providing airborne early warning, command and control, and search-and-rescue coordination.

Operational role
In the Gulf War, the class-level role represented by this record was carrier aviation rather than the physical use of the ship's defensive weapons. USS Theodore Roosevelt served as the Nimitz-class flight deck and command-and-support platform for Carrier Air Wing Eight as coalition forces struck Iraqi targets and supported the Kuwait Theater of Operations.
The available official sources identify the carrier-air-wing team, the Desert Storm campaign, the sortie period, and air-wing support functions. They support the Nimitz-class row as a U.S. coalition carrier strike platform in the conflict, while aircraft- and squadron-level pages remain the better place for individual aircraft, munition, and target claims.
