Direct proof of use
The M119 is documented in the 2001 War in Afghanistan through official U.S. Army and DVIDS reporting from Operation Enduring Freedom. A September 2004 DVIDS image record places an M119 firing near Kandahar Airfield, and a May 2011 DVIDS story says Battery A, 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery Regiment airlifted two M119 howitzers by CH-47 to a mountain outpost in Spera District, Khowst province.
U.S. Army reporting later documented the digitized M119A3 in northeast Afghanistan. On May 15, 2014, an Army article said Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment became the first operators of the M119A3 in theater after firing from northeast Afghanistan, with two firing platoons deployed in early February 2014.

Timeline
The public record shows M119 use in Afghanistan before the M119A3 digitized variant arrived in theater. DVIDS lists a September 21, 2004 image of soldiers firing an M119 howitzer near Kandahar Airfield, tying the system to early Operation Enduring Freedom service.
From May 13 to 19, 2011, Battery A, 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery Regiment flew two M119 howitzers into Spera District, Khowst province. The mission supported 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division soldiers operating in the area, and the platoon reported firing high-explosive and illumination rounds while remaining ready for artillery-support calls.
In 2014, Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment deployed M119A3 howitzers to northeast Afghanistan. The Army described the guns supporting counter-fire after hostile indirect fire, observed-fire training against historical enemy locations, smoke, and illumination in support of friendly operations and to disrupt enemy activity.

Operational role
In Afghanistan, the M119's documented role centered on light 105 mm indirect fire for U.S. Army units operating from fixed bases, forward outposts, and air-mobile positions. The 2011 Khowst mission emphasized mobility: CH-47 Chinooks carried the guns to a mountain outpost so the platoon could support clearing operations and remain available for calls for fire in the area of operations.
The 2014 M119A3 reporting shows the same fire-support role with a digitized gun system. Alpha Battery crews at Bagram Airfield and forward operating bases Gamberi, Mehtar Lam, and Wright used M119A3 and M777A2 howitzers while training, advising, and assisting Afghan National Security Forces and protecting the force.
A 2016 Army article adds maintenance context rather than a separate firing incident. It says M119, M119A1, and M119A2 predecessors played significant roles in Operation Enduring Freedom, and that reports from Afghanistan about M119A2 recoil-system maintenance burdens helped drive redesign work for the M119A3 recoil system.
