Direct proof of use
Leopard 1 use in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War is documented through Western transfer records, Ukrainian service adoption, battlefield reporting, and visual-loss documentation. Germany's official delivery list records 103 Leopard 1A5 tanks with spare parts delivered to Ukraine as a joint project with Denmark, while the Danish Ministry of Defence announced the original cooperation with Germany and the Netherlands to refurbish Leopard 1A5 tanks for Ukrainian service.
Ukrainska Pravda, citing Ukraine's Ministry of Defence, reported on 18 October 2023 that Defence Minister Rustem Umierov accepted Leopard 1A5, Leopard 2A5, and Leopard 2A6 tanks into Ukrainian service and quoted the ministry as saying the tanks received from Western partners had already proven themselves in combat. Subsequent battlefield reporting described Ukrainian Leopard 1A5 crews using the tanks in combat, and Oryx lists visually documented Ukrainian Leopard 1A5 losses in the war.

Timeline
The Leopard 1 lane opened publicly on 7 February 2023, when Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands announced a plan to provide Ukraine with at least 100 refurbished Leopard 1 tanks, including logistics support and training. Associated Press reporting from the same day placed the pledge in the context of Ukraine preparing for continued Russian offensives in eastern and southern Ukraine.
By October 2023, Ukraine had formally accepted the Leopard 1A5 into service. By 2026, Germany's public military-support list showed the Leopard 1A5 package as a delivered armored-vehicle item, with ammunition for Leopard 1 tanks also listed among delivered support.

Battlefield role
The documented role was Ukrainian armored fire support rather than a new heavy-armor breakthrough platform. Defence Blog reported in December 2023 that Ukrainian forces had deployed newly received Leopard 1A5 tanks on the battlefield and quoted a Ukrainian soldier describing engagements at ranges over 3,000 meters.
Defense Express later reported that soldiers from Ukraine's 5th Heavy Mechanized Brigade described using Leopard 1A5 tanks from covered positions as improvised indirect-fire support, with enemy infantry and fortifications among typical target sets. That reporting also said only part of the Leopard 1A5 fleet was used for those fire-support tasks, while other tanks were retained in prepared positions against possible armored attacks.

Evidence and limits
The strongest public evidence separates delivery from battlefield use. Official German and Danish records establish transfer and sustainment; Ukrainian ministry-linked reporting establishes service adoption and a combat-use claim; battlefield articles describe how crews were employing the tanks; and Oryx provides visual-loss evidence that Leopard 1A5 tanks were present in Ukrainian service under combat conditions.
The public sources do not support a complete order of battle for every Leopard 1A5 variant or unit. They support Ukrainian use of Leopard 1A5-family tanks in the war, with the clearest described roles being direct fire, longer-range fire support, and retained defensive armor.
