Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The Iveco LMV is documented on both sides of the full-scale phase of the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War. Norway's Ministry of Defence announced on 15 September 2022 that it had donated 14 IVECO LMV armored vehicles to Ukraine after Ukrainian authorities requested them.

Ukrainian battlefield use is documented by ArmyInform, a Ukrainian Ministry of Defense media outlet, which reported on 22 September 2022 that Italian Iveco LMV armored vehicles were helping Ukrainian Air Assault Forces. The report attributed the vehicle's use to paratroopers and listed reconnaissance, search, and evacuation among its applications.

Russian-side battlefield presence is documented through visual loss records. Oryx's Russian equipment-loss list states that it includes only destroyed, damaged, abandoned, or captured equipment for which photo or video evidence is available, and lists 35 Russian Iveco LMV Rys losses in the invasion. A separate Army Recognition survey reported that at least three Russian Rys LMV IVECO vehicles had been visually confirmed captured by Ukrainian forces as of 26 June 2022.

Timeline

The earliest public wartime evidence in this record concerns Russian Rys vehicles captured during the first months of the full-scale invasion. Army Recognition's June 2022 capture survey counted at least three visually confirmed Rys LMV IVECO vehicles captured from Russian and separatist forces by Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine's donor-supplied LMV lane became public later in 2022. Norway announced the donation of 14 IVECO LMVs on 15 September 2022, and ArmyInform reported a week later that Ukrainian Air Assault Forces were using Iveco LMVs in battlefield tasks. Belgium then became another reported LMV supplier: Army Recognition reported in March 2023 that Belgium would deliver 80 Iveco LMV Lynx vehicles to Ukraine, and Shephard reported in March 2024 that Belgium had announced a further package including 300 Lynx LMVs.

Operational role

The documented Ukrainian role is protected light mobility rather than a heavy fire-support function. Norway described the donated LMVs as armored vehicles with good mobility and protection, while ArmyInform described use by Ukrainian Air Assault Forces in reconnaissance, search, evacuation, and combat-task contexts.

The Russian Rys evidence should be read differently. Oryx proves Russian LMV Rys battlefield presence through visually confirmed losses, not a complete order of battle or a full operating history. The capture reporting shows that some Russian Rys vehicles entered Ukrainian hands during the war, but it does not prove that every captured vehicle was subsequently used operationally by Ukraine.
