Direct proof of use
The clearest official Ukrainian evidence is the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine's June 2026 overview of Swedish Giraffe radars. It states that Giraffe-family radars had strengthened the Defence Forces of Ukraine, contributed to protecting Ukrainian airspace, and helped detect and track aerial threats during Russia's continuing air attacks.
Ireland's transfer evidence is narrower but directly tied to the same conflict. The Office of the President of Ukraine said on February 27, 2025 that Ireland's Taoiseach announced Giraffe radars for Ukraine during air-defense discussions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Irish parliamentary records in April 2025 described further donations including Giraffe radar systems, and a November 2025 Dail debate stated that five air-defense radar systems were delivered to Ukraine in June 2025.

Timeline
Before the transfer, Irish parliamentary records identified Giraffe Mk4 as an Irish Army short-range air-defense radar system. That record supports the inventory context for later reporting, but the official Ukrainian and Irish transfer statements did not publish serial numbers or a full variant breakdown.
On February 27, 2025, Ukraine's presidential readout announced Ireland's commitment to provide Giraffe radars. On April 1, 2025, Irish government remarks said Ireland was progressing donations that included Giraffe radar systems. On November 18, 2025, Irish parliamentary debate recorded that five air-defense radar systems and a fire tender had been delivered to Ukraine in June 2025.

Air-defense role
The documented Ukrainian role is air surveillance, early warning, and air-defense coordination rather than direct fire. Ukraine's defence ministry described the Giraffe family as combining radar surveillance with command, control, and communications functions, detecting aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and small low-altitude UAVs depending on variant, and supporting integration with short- and medium-range air-defense systems.
Secondary reporting after the delivery identified the Irish systems as likely Giraffe Mark IV units and linked them to Ireland's seven-radar inventory. Because official delivery statements used the broader phrases Giraffe radars or air-defense radar systems, the conflict record should be read as legacy Giraffe 40/Giraffe Mk IV family context, not as proof that every delivered unit was a separately verified Giraffe 40 variant.
