Bureviy

Also known as

  • Bureviy Hurricane

Bureviy is a Ukrainian 220 mm multiple launch rocket system that updates the BM-27 Uragan concept with a Tatra T815-7 8x8 chassis, digital fire-control equipment, and compatibility with Uragan-family rockets. Developed by Shepetivka Repair Plant and publicly tested in 2020, it gives Ukrainian artillery a more mobile heavy rocket launcher while retaining the 16-tube 220 mm rocket package used for area fires.

Role in Conflicts

Ukrainian forces fielded the locally built Bureviy MLRS during the full-scale Russian invasion, with RFE/RL documenting a frontline unit firing near Kharkiv in August 2022 and Bureviy crews operating from concealed positions in the Donetsk region in December 2022.

Its rocket family gives heavier payloads than BM-21 Grad-class systems, including high-explosive fragmentation, cluster, incendiary, fuel-air explosive, and mine-scattering rounds. Documented use spans Russia-Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, Nagorno-Karabakh, and the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, with the system still relevant through Ukrainian overhaul work and Bureviy modernization.

Czech government reporting and frontline media document the system in Ukrainian service during the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War, where it provides mobile area-fire and counter-battery rocket artillery.
