Documented Use

Direct proof of use

Bureviy use in the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War is directly documented by battlefield reporting from Ukrainian service. RFE/RL photographed a Ukrainian frontline unit deploying the locally built Bureviy multiple-launch rocket system against Russian targets near Kharkiv on August 8, 2022, and described the launcher moving into a combat position before firing.

Additional RFE/RL video reporting from December 7, 2022 showed Ukrainian Bureviy crews operating from concealed positions in the Donetsk region and firing rockets in support of Ukrainian efforts to stop Russian infantry advances.

Timeline

The first public combat-use reporting located for this record came in June 2022, when Defense Express and Army Recognition reported that a video circulating online showed Ukrainian forces deploying Bureviy for combat operations against Russian troops. Those reports are useful early indicators, but they are secondary reporting based on posted video rather than the later RFE/RL field reports.

In August 2022, RFE/RL documented Bureviy use near Kharkiv. In December 2022, RFE/RL documented Bureviy crews in the Donetsk region, adding a second independently reported battlefield location for Ukrainian operational use.

Battlefield role

Bureviy served as Ukrainian heavy rocket artillery rather than as a newly imported foreign system. The launcher modernized the Soviet BM-27 Uragan concept on a Tatra 8x8 chassis while retaining a 16-tube 220 mm rocket package. RFE/RL described Ukrainian soldiers using the system with Uragan-family rockets, and Defense Express described the Bureviy as capable of firing 220 mm rockets including high-explosive fragmentation, submunition, and mine-laying rounds.

The documented missions were area fires and fire support against Russian forces. Near Kharkiv, RFE/RL reported use against Russian targets; in Donetsk region reporting, crews described firing from concealment and then moving quickly, with the Tatra chassis and updated controls presented as practical advantages for mobility and survivability.
