Direct proof of use
The BMP-3 is documented in the Russia-Ukraine war through visual loss records, Russian fire-support reporting, and Ukrainian captured-vehicle reporting. Oryx lists Russian BMP-3 losses in the full-scale invasion with linked visual evidence for destroyed, damaged, abandoned, and captured vehicles.
Russian employment is also described in January 2024 reporting from the Kupyansk direction, where Russian sources said a BMP-3 crew from the 1st Guards Tank Army's Western Group of Forces fired on Ukrainian positions. Ukrainian operation is separately documented by reporting that the 98th Territorial Defense Battalion Azov used captured Russian BMP-3 IFVs and by Defense Express reporting on a captured BMP-3 used by Ukrainian soldiers from the 21st Sarmat Battalion.

Timeline
After Russia's full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, visually documented Russian BMP-3 losses and captures became part of the open-source armored-vehicle record. By December 2022, Army Recognition reported Ukrainian operation of captured BMP-3s, including vehicles shown with the 98th Territorial Defense Battalion Azov.
On January 22, 2024, RIA reported a Russian Ministry of Defense statement that a BMP-3 crew in the Kupyansk direction fired on Ukrainian infantry positions, and Army Recognition later described the same theater pattern as Russian BMP-3 fire-support employment from direct and indirect positions. In August 2024, Defense Express reported another captured Russian BMP-3 in Ukrainian hands and said the vehicle had already been fired by Ukrainian soldiers.

Operational pattern
The documented pattern separates Russian use, Ukrainian capture, and Ukrainian reuse. Russian forces fielded the BMP-3 as an infantry fighting vehicle and fire-support vehicle, with reporting from the Kupyansk direction describing crews firing the 100 mm main gun, 30 mm autocannon, and machine gun against Ukrainian positions, fortifications, infantry, and light targets.
Ukrainian use came from captured Russian vehicles rather than a confirmed pre-war Ukrainian BMP-3 fleet in this record. Army Recognition reported in December 2022 that enough BMP-3s had been captured to equip a motorized infantry battalion and identified Ukrainian operation by the 98th Territorial Defense Battalion Azov. Defense Express later described Ukrainian soldiers capturing a Russian BMP-3 and using its 100 mm cannon on a high-arc trajectory.
Oryx's vehicle-loss list supports the breadth of BMP-3 battlefield exposure, but it is a visual-evidence record of losses and captures rather than a complete order of battle. The strongest supported claims for this page are that Russian BMP-3s were fielded and lost in the conflict, that Russian crews used them for fire support, and that Ukrainian units operated captured examples.
