Direct proof of use

The strongest single conflict-use record is the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 on July 17, 2014. The Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team reported that MH17 was shot down by a 9M38-series Buk missile launched from a Buk TELAR transported from Russia to a farm field near Pervomaiskyi in separatist-controlled eastern Ukraine, then returned to Russia with one missile missing.

The Dutch Safety Board reached a separate technical finding that a 9N314M warhead launched by a Buk surface-to-air missile system detonated near the cockpit while MH17 was over eastern Ukraine. Together, those official investigations directly support Buk-system use during the 2014 Donbas phase of the war.

Buk-family systems also appear in the full-scale invasion phase. Timeline

The 2014 MH17 case documents a Buk TELAR and 9M38-series missile used against an aircraft over eastern Ukraine.
