Direct proof of use
The strongest single conflict-use record is the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 on July 17, 2014. The Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team reported that MH17 was shot down by a 9M38-series Buk missile launched from a Buk TELAR transported from Russia to a farm field near Pervomaiskyi in separatist-controlled eastern Ukraine, then returned to Russia with one missile missing.
The Dutch Safety Board reached a separate technical finding that a 9N314M warhead launched by a Buk surface-to-air missile system detonated near the cockpit while MH17 was over eastern Ukraine. Together, those official investigations directly support Buk-system use during the 2014 Donbas phase of the war.
Buk-family systems also appear in the full-scale invasion phase. CSIS reported that Ukraine operated 72 9K37M Buk-M1 systems before Russia's 2022 invasion and described mobile, dispersed Ukrainian Buk employment as a core part of Ukraine's ground-based air-defense response. Oryx lists visually documented Ukrainian 9A310M1 TELARs and 9A39M1 TELs for Buk-M1, and Russian 9A310M1-2, 9A39M1-2, 9A316, 9A317, and 9A317M Buk-family vehicles lost during the invasion.

Timeline
On July 17, 2014, MH17 was destroyed over eastern Ukraine. The Dutch Safety Board later identified the weapon effect as a 9N314M Buk warhead, while the Joint Investigation Team attributed the launch to a Buk TELAR brought from Russia to separatist-held territory near Pervomaiskyi.
On February 24, 2022, Russia began the full-scale invasion. CSIS describes Ukraine entering that phase with 9K37M Buk-M1 systems and then dispersing mobile air defenses, including Buk units, into small teams. Oryx's continuing visual-loss records show both Ukrainian and Russian Buk-family vehicles destroyed, damaged, captured, or otherwise lost during the invasion.

Operational role
In this conflict, the Buk record is an air-defense record rather than a ground-strike record. The 2014 MH17 case documents a Buk TELAR and 9M38-series missile used against an aircraft over eastern Ukraine. In the 2022 phase, CSIS describes Ukrainian Buk systems as mobile ground-based air defenses that survived by dispersal, operated as pop-up threats, and helped push Russian aircraft away from Ukrainian airspace.
The visually documented loss record broadens the picture from single incidents to sustained fielding. Oryx records Ukrainian Buk-M1 TELAR and TEL losses, and it also records Russian Buk-M1-2, Buk-M2, and Buk-M3-family launch vehicles and radars among documented equipment losses. Those entries prove presence and fielding of Buk-family air-defense equipment by both sides, while they do not by themselves identify every engagement or aircraft targeted.
