The weapon's Ukraine use is consistent with its known vehicle-mounted automatic mortar role on GAZ-66, MT-LB, and similar platforms.

Documented Use

Direct proof of use

The 2B9 Vasilek is directly tied to the 2014 Russia-Ukraine War through monitoring reports, loss documentation, and battlefield destruction reports. During the Donbas phase, the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission reported Ukrainian government-controlled Vasilek mortars in storage, near positions, and moving near the contact line, including a military truck carrying a 2B9 Vasilek automatic mortar at Maiorsk on 19 October 2016.

The system also appeared in non-government-controlled areas before Russia's full-scale invasion. On 21 February 2022, the OSCE SMM recorded one towed 2B9 Vasilek 82 mm mortar in a residential area of Dubove, then in non-government-controlled Luhansk region. After 24 February 2022, Oryx's visual-loss lists recorded Russian MT-LB vehicles fitted with 82 mm automatic mortar 2B9 Vasilek systems and a Ukrainian GAZ-66 carrying an 82 mm 2B9 Vasilek mortar among documented equipment losses.

Timeline

The public record starts with monitored Donbas deployments before the full-scale invasion and then shifts to visually documented equipment losses and strike reports from the larger 2022-onward war. These records support possession and battlefield fielding by both Ukrainian and Russian-side forces, while only some reports describe an immediate firing threat or a specific destroyed position.

Ukrainian official and media reporting in 2023 described Russian Vasilek systems being destroyed in eastern Ukraine. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reported on 28 June 2023 that border guards adjusted artillery fire against a Russian-occupation 82 mm 2B9 Vasilek mortar position in Donetsk region. Ukrainska Pravda later reported that the Steel Border unit destroyed a Ural truck-mounted Russian 2B9 Vasilek on the Kupiansk front while the crew was deploying to attack Ukrainian positions.

Vehicle-mounted mortar role

The Vasilek's conflict record in Ukraine is strongly associated with vehicle mounting. ARES describes the 2B9M as a clip-fed 82 mm automatic mortar that can be moved by trucks such as the GAZ-66 and has also been adapted to MT-LB armored carriers. That background matches the Ukraine-specific evidence: Oryx lists Russian MT-LB-mounted examples and a Ukrainian GAZ-66-mounted example, while Ukrainian reporting in November 2023 described a Russian Ural truck-mounted Vasilek on the Kupiansk front.

The National Defence University of Ukraine's public equipment page states that the 2B9 Vasilek has been used by both sides in the Russian-Ukrainian War since 2014 and gives an August 2022 example in which Ukrainian 22nd Separate Motorized Infantry Battalion mortar operators destroyed a Russian MT-LB with a 2B9. Taken together, the sources support a conflict-use entry for short-range automatic mortar fire support on both sides, with documented Russian-side losses and Ukrainian-side possession rather than a complete order of battle.
