Direct proof of use
FIM-92 Stinger use in the 1990 Gulf War is documented as coalition fielding and defensive employment rather than confirmed missile firing. Redstone Arsenal's Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm history says U.S. Army air-defense systems sent to Southwest Asia included Stinger in manportable, Avenger, and Air-to-Air Stinger configurations.
The same Redstone account says Stinger-RMP provided highly mobile short-range air-defense protection to maneuver forces during the Gulf War, that 66 OH-58C Army scout helicopters deployed with Air-to-Air Stinger, and that Stinger missiles were available for ship-defense duties on the Military Sealift Command ship Regulus before the force reached theater. It also states that no Stinger-RMP missiles were fired during Operation Desert Storm because coalition air superiority left few targets for most deployed air-defense systems.

Timeline
During the Desert Shield buildup, U.S. forces moved Stinger-equipped air-defense elements and Stinger-armed platforms to Southwest Asia. Redstone's Gulf War history places Stinger among the air-defense missile systems deployed to the Persian Gulf and describes ship-defense Stingers aboard the Regulus during movement toward Saudi Arabia.
In 1991, the Stinger-RMP test program was interrupted by the war. The Federation of American Scientists profile says the Stinger-RMP missile test program was suspended during Operation Desert Storm and that the missile was rushed into the field in preparation for war. After Desert Storm, the Army moved toward Block I and Block II upgrade work to address RMP deficiencies and improve performance.

Operational role
The documented Gulf War role was force protection and short-range air defense for coalition forces. Stinger-RMP gave maneuver units a portable air-defense missile against low-flying aircraft, while Air-to-Air Stinger equipped OH-58C scout helicopters and Avenger paired Stinger missiles with a vehicle-mounted air-defense turret.
The available sources separate deployment from firing. Redstone's official history describes Stinger-RMP as deployed and protective in the Gulf War, but it also says Patriot was the only U.S. Army air-defense missile system fired in combat during Operation Desert Storm and later repeats that no Stinger-RMP missiles were fired. The page therefore treats Stinger as fielded and employed for defensive coverage, not as a documented Desert Storm shooter.
Later U.S. Army material summarizes the same broad role by saying Stinger provided overwatch for service members during Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. That statement supports the force-protection reading but does not identify specific Gulf War engagements.
